Work from home jobs are convenient and can help you maintain a healthier work-life balance. Remote work increases your time availability, decreases expended resources and can be a better solution if the office environment does not work for your needs.
The first benefits are the hours and resources you save by not driving to work. You can get back all the time you spent driving to and from work, getting stuck in traffic, and stopping for fuel.
The average one-way commute time for U.S. workers was more than 27 minutes in 2019. Workers spend about an hour on the road just getting to work and going back home. That time adds up to five hours a week, more than 20 hours a month, and well over 240 hours – or 10 days – annually.
Rush hour in most places is between 6:00 am to 10:00 am and then 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Like many American workers, you may have adjusted your start time to beat the traffic. For instance, you may have left earlier or later than these periods to avoid idling on the road with the other commuters.
Getting back time driving is just one perk of getting rid of the work commute. Your car and related expenses should also decrease by working from home. Stop-and-go traffic is brutal on your vehicle, as it wears down brakes faster and uses more fuel.
Your vehicle expenses decrease when you are not driving as much. The average commute costs were approximately $4,500. However, in some states, this number is even higher, such as in New York, where the cost amounts to $7,200.
If you are a parent, working from home can also cut your childcare expenses. Consider the following 2021 national averages for childcare per week, according to the Center for American Progress:
- A nanny for one child is $612 or $654 for two children
- A childcare center for one child is $340 or $640 for two children
- After-school sitter for one child is $244 or $248 for two children
Childcare centers increased prices significantly in 2021 due to the pandemic. A childcare center can cost about $1,230 monthly for just one child, which is 25 percent of the median household income.
You may have more opportunities with online jobs to work from home since your search is not limited to your city or town. You can apply for a remote position from companies on the other side of the country.
While there are plenty of benefits with remote jobs, they are not for everyone. Some of the following drawbacks may make you reconsider.
